Kim Kardashian Kontinues to Krush It

Complete with a wedding/honeymoon glow, Kim Kardashian took on NYC tonight at Capitale. As usual she looked flawless! Fashion Front: Kim’s dress is by Kim Allen.

Magazine mogul Jason Binn and celebrity event planner Colin Cowie threw the bash for Kim and her hubby, Kris Humphries. The giant cake read: Welcome to NYC Kim & Kris! Kourtney Kardashian, Kim’s older sister, was also rocking the red carpet, promoting their new show, “Kourtney & Kim Take New York”. Lala Vazquez Anthony was also graced the event to celebrate her bff, Kim. Capitale was packed with…well…a bunch of randoms for the most part. I ran into my good friend and Extra correspondent, AJ Calloway (below right)….and also met the founder of Gilt Groupe, Kevin Ryan. OK, it’s bed time, gotta be up in 4 hours (death!). I’m glad I got a chance to share these fresh pictures with y’all.

North Carolina: In Wake of Hurricane Irene

Southern pace of life. Truly Julie in the historic town of Swansboro.I have many flaws, but one that concerns me the most is my inability to relax. People…I had shingles this year because I ran myself ragged. True story. Every trip I’ve ever taken has been jam packed with sightseeing, scuba diving, flea market shopping, etc. So, when I took a trip to remote Emerald Isle, a sliver of an island just south of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, I was worried. I didn’t know if I could adjust to the Southern pace…but thankfully, I was wrong. I reveled in the simple pleasures of life: friends, good food, plenty of sleep (a first in 8 years!), watching the pelicans fly, a cute little girl building a sandcastle around her grandma, sunsets without city noise…the list goes on. All of this was just two weeks ago, pre-Hurricane Irene. Like so many East Coast areas, Emerald Isle was hit hard. One glaring example of this was the collapse of the beloved Bogue Inlet Pier, which was built in 1957. Hard to believe, I was splashing around under the pier just two weeks ago…and now….well, it’s nearly gone.

I don’t know what this surfer was thinking facing Irene head-on like this, but I can say with relief that no one lost their life on the island. Despite the staggering damage, I know North Carolina will be just fine because of the amazing human spirit there. Our car broke down in a parking lot one night…and a perfect stranger ran around the near empty lot for half an hour locating jumper cables for us. It may be a slower rhythm of life…but when crisis hits, whether it be a dead car battery or an unforgiving hurricane, the collective effort of the South will amaze and warm the heart of any city girl:)

Justin, the parking lot hero!   This happy grandma brings me instant joy! Find more southern charm in the picture gallery below.

Fashion Week: Why It’s More Than Just Fashion & More Than Just a Week

Truly Julie looks like a kid at a candy store at the Number:Lab fashion presentation. Fashion Front: Grace Sun dress.
With Hurricane Irene past us, there’s another storm brewing: NYC Fashion Week. My sister, Grace Sun, calls it her “Super Bowl” (check out her hilarious write up here), and others call it frivolous, superficial and a waste of $$$. An average runway show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center costs $250,000 and upwards, which is an exorbitant amount of money given a runway show usually lasts 10 minutes tops. But a lot happens in those few minutes. For example, you can do some serious “star gazing”, case in point: Iman, Nigel Barker, Kanye West, Carey Mulligan, Tim Gunn and Carolina Herrera, as well as celebrity clothes mongers (e.g., Kim Kardashian).

Simon Huck, Jonathan Cheban, Kim & Kourtney Kardashian, and Scott Disick atJill Stuart runway show. I took this picture from my awesome seat. Thanks, Alison Brod!

For me, Fashion Week is more than just fashion and the impact of that week, which certainly lasts a whole lot longer (the trends established at each FW will be played out for months if not years). Whether it’s dance, art, music, writing, speech etc…I love anything that celebrates your ability to express yourself. Fashion is a way for me to tell the world, without ever opening my mouth, that I’m fun, daring, sophisticated and confident. The argument that fashion is superfluous cuts both ways. Yeah, sure, it’s what’s on the inside that matters…but the way you express yourself through your style, in an instant, tells people who you are. Fashion–the ability to showcase your personality through clothes– is very powerful.  One woman who’s discovered this force is Vogue editor, Anna Wintour. Grace and I had a fun run-in with her at the Rag & Bone show last year (find it here). And in the below gallery, pictures galore of my Fashion Week adventures from previous years; and on the following sites, some colorful examples of expression: WhoWhatWear.com, The.Satorialist.com or MAMAisHaute.com. But really, inspiration can come from anything! So as we gear up for Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012, just remember, your style and fashion can be your voice….so sing a song that will make people stop and listen! As the proverbial saying goes, life isn’t a dress rehearsal. Dress. To. Kill.

The City that Never Sleeps Takes a Nap for Hurricane Irene

I’m writing this post just an hour out from when the winds of Irene are supposed to kick up. With the mayor urging people to stay indoors Sat 9PM to Sun 9PM, I thought it’d be ok to walk around 6PM-ish to grab pictures of an eerily empty Soho (& more honesty to grab a solid meal before resorting to snacks).

Mayor Bloomberg said to hope for the best and prepare for the worst, and it seems many stores heeded his message. After all, we are experiencing many firsts with Irene. In an unprecedented fashion, the mayor issued a mandatory evacuation of all those living in Zone A (low-lying areas such as Lower Manhattan). And for the first time in its 100-year history, the city shut down the subway and bus services as of noon today.

H&M is one of the many stores with stacks of sandbags outlining its doors. Other businesses boarded up their windows. But in true New York-ness, you find people from all walks of life dealing with situations quite differently. In the thick of hurricane watch, there was a dance party at Felix restaurant. It’s always been known for that European pop-your-collar scene, but at a time when families are checking into shelters…a bit obnoxious.

Now, I’m not saying Irene should have you sulking at home, but an all out dance party? I worry about how all these drunk people will stumble home (catch the video here). I have a guilty confession of my own, though. While most are probably boiling ramen noodles at home, I was able to dine on fine sushi. Here’s another city first: no freakin’ line at Tomoe! I owned the place. I have pictures in the gallery to prove this epic, rare event. And Irene, if you happen to be reading this post, please know that while this is the toughest city on earth, we have gone through enough hardships. Please make this a breeze.

With fondest respect for Mother Earth,

Julie

American Idol Season 10 Grand Finale!

Truly Julie with Idol runner-up, Lauren Alaina, and Idol winner, Scotty McCreery     Crowning moment: confetti pours as 17 year old, Scotty McCreery, becomes the new American Idol!
Haley Reinhart with that Janis-Joplin-esque voice came in third.True behind-the-scenes moment. Truly Julie inside the makeshift Idol tent typing up her script at 1AM PST. It may be LA but it’s really cold at that early hour. Every May, I know there will be a week where I sleep a total of 8 hours in 4 days.  It’s called: American Idol Season Finale! Season 10 of Idol was truly a big surprise. With Simon Cowell gone…and Season 9 being somewhat lackluster, many were skeptical that J.Lo and Steven Tyler could turn the tide. Thanks to one of the most talented batches of contestants, Season 10 hit a high note.  Idol remained the top rated primetime show for the 7th consecutive year…not to mention the biggest viewership gain in years. As Judge Randy Jackson told me, “The new Idol remix is off the chain.”

Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery opened my eyes to what America is really into: COUNTRY. I really thought only one of them would be in the top two, since my theory was they’d split the “country” votes.  In the end…Haley Reinhart got knocked out, despite her power Janis Joplin-esque voice.  It’s crazy to think that these two were born in ’93 and ’94. I’m so freakin’ old!!  I feel lucky to be able to cover such a huge show….and to witness a grocery store bagger becoming a national sensation, all within 3 months. It’s really a show about the American Dream.  And let’s not forget about the star studded grand finale.  This year’s highlights: Lady Gaga, Bono & The Edge and Beyonce!  I took a very special date to the event: my 11 year old niece, Hana! You can catch my Idol coverage here! (I recommend the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th clips because they include interviews with Lauren and Scotty. I ask them if they’re going to get married!)

Fashion Front: Tibi dress, Lanvin for H&M necklace. All of my dresses for the week of American Idol were rented! Check out RentTheRunway.com. It’s really a great way to get all dolled up without so much investment ($$$, time spent shopping and closet space!). The purple dress you see in the Gallery Pictures below is Temperley London. The print knit dress is by Missoni. Yes, all at RentTheRunway.

The Smurfs Premiere: Feeling “Blue” Never Felt so Glam!

Truly Julie rocking the blue carpet at The Smurfs premiere.

What a dream come true!! I grew up watching “The Smurfs” in Korea as a kid…so when I was asked to play myself in the movie…I almost passed out.  My 3 second cameo (which happens within the first 5 mins of the movie) was initially a 10 second scene, with about 3 lines.  The end result? I got 1 line in there! And believe it or not…that 3 second scene was a 6 hour day of shooting.  We did 6 or 7 takes total..but since it was a party scene with lots of extras…it took a while to coordinate each retake. My scene is of me coming down the stairs with the bodacious Sofia Vergara (twitter: @SofiaVergara), so I guarantee: NO ONE IS LOOKING AT ME (apparently I may be wrong on this: CarlosCS5 posted this!)  But the memory of this glorious day will last in my mind for years to come.  I’ve covered dozens and dozens of premieres…but this was my first time actually getting to walk the “blue carpet”, too.  If the Julie Chang…or Juyoung…at age 7 knew this day was coming….WOW.  Click here to see my BIG cameo (an oxymoron).  And click here to see what my fellow cast members thought about my performance (You won’t believe Neil Patrick Harris’ response!)

Mmmm….Coffee: My Obsession and Personality in a Cup

Bitter Sweet: Truly Julie’s best cup of latte (ever!) was from Caffeteria, which sadly closed. Velvety, smooth and rich, you could say there’s a lot of love in this cup. Pun intended:)

As New York City (and much of the East Coast) scurries to prepare for the pending Hurricane Irene, I’m seeking mental solace by thinking about my weekend cup of joe. I limit myself to 3 coffee/espresso drinks a week, so when I do get my taste buds on that bitterly rich, sweet perfection, I want to make it count. This usually means, saving my coffee experiences for the weekend, so I can really savor each drop. And quite frankly, I love the cafe culture. I almost NEVER get my favorite beverage in a to-go cup…because that’s just sacrilegious. There’s nothing quite like licking the foamy froth off a latte on the rim of a porcelain cup. I know most people get hooked on coffee for the caffeine fix, but for me, it’s all about the taste. With or without the jolt, I’d still love it! Ok, ok, the caffeine does give my personality an extra sparkle factor and who doesn’t enjoy that? I guess between the taste and the buzz, it’s a win-win. I’ll drink to that!

Below: Frothy cup of love at Abraco in the East Village

All the latte pics are from some of the best coffee spots in NYC. I’ve noticed that they use yummy coffee brands such as Blue Bottle, Sumpton and Intelligentsia. Caffeteria, my favorite cafe, which sadly closed in Soho after less than a year, used Blue Bottle AND the awesome Battenkill Valley milk. This milk makes a HUGE difference! With its density and hint of sweetness, even its 2% milk tastes almost like delicious cream. When I make filter coffee at home, I brew Cafe Rey’s Tarrazu. I fell for it in Costa Rica and ordered two boxes worth:) I’m always on the lookout for good coffee, so let me know of your favorite joint! For more “coffeenerdness” (extra points if you get this Peter King/Sports Illustrated reference) check out my gallery below, which includes lattes from Grumpy’s and Third Rail.

The Maldives: How I Played Travel Roulette and Won the Lotto

Truly Julie chillin’ on the most perfectly placed hammock in the most perfect place.
No reason to neglect an “asian pose” just because you’re 70 ft underwater:)

No words or pictures can do the Maldives justice. But I’ll try. This is the lagoon at Naladhu Resort.

I’ve been told I’m rather a free spirit; that I often throw caution to the wind all the while being as bold as a honey badger (if you do not get this reference, this youtube viral video is a must). Perhaps nothing displays this better than how I often travel. Usually with two weeks or less planning time, I will play what I call “travel roulette” online. I’ll surf travel sites with great last minute deals and book it on a whim. Yup, even if it means a 24-hour flight: à la the Maldives. Once I spotted the sweet deal and sparkling pictures of Naladhu resort, which is on a private island off the coast of Sri Lanka, it was hook, line and sinker.

The travel time to paradise was grueling! From JFK, it was 14 hours to Dubai with a 7-hour layover, then another 4-hour flight to Male airport in the Maldives, then an hour boat ride to Naladhu. Two things that made this trek doable: Pinkberry at Dubai airport and flying Emirates. And boy…the first site of that ridiculously clear blue water and you realize…no distance is too far for this kind of beauty. I mean, I was waiting for unicorns to prance through the iridescent water. Simply put, it’s like winning a lotto for all your senses.

The Naladhu resort has only 20 or so ocean front homes on the whole atoll. It has a “no front desk” setting, meaning each house comes with a butler so that you never have to contact the front desk for anything. I know…ridunkulous! Each house is about 3,500 sq ft and comes with all the amenities that you ooh-and-ah over on the pages of Travel & Leisure. Here I am at the main door of my ocean front home. Yes…darling…my ocean front home.

My absolute favorite about the Maldives, though, is the marine life. Just off my back deck was basically an aquarium. A natural barrier prevented waves from breaking through, leaving 2 feet of pristine water where two octopi were mating every day! You have got to see this video, click here: Octopi Love. And in that same “pond”, 2 spotted moray eels, a school of parrot fish, a sting ray, crabs galore, a trumpet fish, a variety of starfish, and so on. I also went scuba diving every day, and one dive in particular changed my life! By a stroke of luck, I signed up for a dive and it ended up being just me and the dive master. She said, “I’ve never had fewer than 4 divers with me, but since it’s just you and me, we’re going to go to a secret spot that I usually save for us dive masters.” That dive was like West Side Story underwater. We spotted 12 sharks total, and 8 of them together. We snapped our fingers like the Jets…the Sharks paused and gave us a “don’t mess with us glare”…and we went our separate ways. 5 stars. I also spotted 4 sea turtles that were the size of SUV tires. So cool. Oh! And on a casual walk on the pier one night, look what I spotted just on the surface of the water…a very poisonous lion fish. Poor thing, it looks so busted.

There is a sad part to this story. The Maldives is a string of atolls with the highest point being just 8 ft above sea level (it has the lowest highest elevation of any country!). If global warming continues, this paradise will submerge. I also learned on the trip that tuna is beyond overfished. Since this trip, I have stopped eating tuna. I guess the true beauty of traveling is that once you really appreciate a place, you care enough to preserve it in whatever way you can. In a way, this “throw caution to the wind” trip made me all the more cautious.

Once Upon a Time…

Truly Julie (left) at age 5 with sister, Grace Sun (MamaIsHaute.com).

Yeah, yeah, that’s a home haircut alright. Truly Julie (left) knitting at age 4.

I often think about what a weird profession I’m in…fun and exciting…but strange. I mean, I realize the minute I pop up on TV, someone is probably criticizing me. Imagine thousands of people being able to see you do your job at work. Wouldn’t you feel like a fish in a tank? There are countless ups to my job, but there is one significant downside of doing such visible work: it’s an easy target for searing scrutiny. But I really don’t think I could’ve been anything other than a broadcaster…or what I like to call a “very vocal storyteller”. My family, including my sister Grace, who’s in these pics with me, says from the minute I was born, I was effervescent, energetic and beyond extroverted. Grace says that I’ve always had an old soul, which made me quite a precocious kid. At the the playground, I would not only befriend other kids, but their parents as well. Some of my mom’s closest friends now are the once random strangers I brought home from the playground. Even now, I have friends who are in their teens to those in their 60′s. What can I say…I was knitting at age 4.

As to how I survive the subjective, fickle TV business? I have two older sisters who always keep me in check AND I have been raised on what I call “Korean tough love”. For example, my dad (may he rest in peace) would call me after my live shots and say, “What happened to your hair?” That was his way of saying, “Hey, I’m proud of you and I’m up at this early hour to watch you.” I realize I work in a cut-throat industry, but storytelling is like my air. I’d rather be scrutinized than not be able to share.

Unleashing My Inner Rock Star!

Truly Julie shredding “Start Me Up” at her rock concert debut.

People often ask me, “What is your favorite story that you’ve done?” To me, this is like asking a mom to pick her favorite child. I try to throw 100% of me into every story I do; and in the process, I fall in love with all of them. But there is one story that particularly stands out from this year: my rock concert debut! School of Rock is an awesome, rad, bad-a%$ after school music program that teaches kids how to jam. Let me just say that if School of Rock existed when I was a kid, I might’ve had a whole different career path. For a story for Good Day New York, I enrolled in the program for 6 weeks with the goal of getting good enough to rock with the School of Rock’s Montclair House Band in NJ at their benefit concert (helping Big Brothers & Big Sisters Essex County). Mission accomplished! Click here to see me go from rocky to rockin’. After six 45-minute drumming lessons and two guitar lessons, I fulfilled my life-long dream of being a rock star. Come on, I know everyone has an inner rock star dream. With sticks, I pounded “Back in Black” by AC/DC. With strings, I shredded “Start Me Up” by The Rolling Stones. All this while sporting a geriatric boot! I had minor foot surgery during this whole process, hence the cane and no heels! Gasp.

I attribute my fast track skills to Julliard trained musical genius, Michael Thurber. Michael is a teacher at the School of Rock, but he’s so much more.  He’s one of the most gifted bass players, and I believe the only student to ever be accepted to both the jazz and classical programs at Julliard. He can learn any song by ear and rocks a minimum of 5 instruments. But it’s Michael’s heart that amazes me the most. His love of music, enthusiasm for life, and wisdom beyond his years…inspired me to no end. I truly believe this story will be so memorable for me for years to come because it opened up my eyes and ears to what I was capable of and also brought me a remarkable, jovial friend.  I hope to continue my guitar lessons (cause lets be real, a drum set will not fit in my apt)! Click here to see me jammin’ at lesson 2.
