Do it for Chicago! Do it for Fashion!

Truly Julie in Chicago…donning a fascinator despite the gusts of the Windy City!                        Fashion Front: Roland Mouret Dress, Soho street vendor fascinator, Lanvin Shoes.

This weekend…I took Chicago by storm to throw one of my dearest friends a baby shower. I’ll
post more on those festivities soon….including my made-from-scratch diaper cake! But for now…I wanted to share my foolishness yet faithfulness to fashion. This was my choice of outfit in 27 degree weather. Sometimes you just gotta bring your own sunshine…a la… yellow fascinator! And what really brightens my day about his hat?! It was $30 on the streets of Soho. Nice Korean couple on the Northwest corner of Bleecker and Sullivan streets. Tell ‘em Julie sent ya!

Happy Lunar New Year!

Truly Julie with stylist and friend Niki Hall at Chinatown Brasserie!                                It’s the year of the Dragon…so let out your ROOOOOOAR! Perhaps simplifying life as opposed to piling things on will light our inner fire versus smother. I heard this straightforward yet profound blurb through a friend…(diagram also provided):)

Truly Julie’s Winter Winners

NYC got its first dose of snow this weekend! Maybe it’s the Michigan girl in me…but there are quite a few things I love about winter. Well…first and foremost…it gives me hope that not all polar bears are drowning in the arctic. Plus…there are fun…delicious ways to beat the winter blues. Here are my “ups” when the mercury goes down.

1)Moon Boots! If I could wear these everyday…I would. They’re like walking on pillows…plus…they have super grips on the bottom so you don’t slip. Sure…you look like you’re 5-years-old waiting for the school bus…or a hardcore Napoleon Dynamite fan…but I guarantee you will be the only one not complaining about cold feet!

2)Korean soups! On your left is Sam Gae Tang (whole chicken ginseng soup) at Arirang Restaurant in Koreatown. On the right is Yuk Gae Jang (spicy beef stew) from Kang Suh.

3)Infinity scarfs and fun hats! Fashion Front: Grace Sun cashmere infinity scarf, Saks Fifth Avenue cashmere hat.

4)Indoor hobbies. I’m obsessed with playing my guitar…and if there’s ever a drum set within 50 yard radius…I’m there. Superhero Arts & Crafts with my nephew is always entertaining. Oh…I also love to knit! so I hit the yarn store Purl in Soho and have my mom…a knitting genius…help me with my projects…i.e. my white hat with the fun grey pom-pom.

Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.

I wanted to post this on Monday (MLK Jr. Day)…but due to a work issue…I had to hold off. Long story. Any who…better late than never. I saw this quote from Dr. King on one of those boards outside a church on Park Ave…almost 2 years ago. I keep it on my phone and read it back every now and then for strength and hope. May his words of wisdom do the same for you.

Yo…only in Tokyo!

Truly Julie with some trendy Tokyo natives….striking the ultimate Asian pose.screen-shot-2012-01-07-at-7-28-56-pmLast year while I was visiting Korea…I decided on a whim to go to Tokyo by myself. It’s only an hour flight from Seoul…so why not?! I stayed in the hip Shinjuku area where girls with dyed blond hair and those oversized-Lady-Gaga-esque contact lens wobbled around in their sky-high heels. Japan is the ultimate juxtaposition of tradition and modernity. And most of all it’s so extreme. If someone decides on a look or style…they go the full nine yards. If you’re going to be a Harajuku girl..then doggone it…you’re going to be most colorful…Fleetwood Mac meets Gwen Stefani meets Hello Kitty…bombshell. If you’re going for the rasta look..then you will stick a wad a gum into that slippery Asian hair and tangle it into a dreadlock somehow. Every time I visit Japan…I come back inspired beyond measure. I just feel like they do everything with such conviction. And my golly…the cleanliness of the entire country. You could…and I would…eat off their subway tracks. Check out my photo gallery below and enjoy your vicarious trip to Tokyo. Arigato!

Truly Julie’s Photography needs your Eye!

I love picture taking so much that I often joke that I have documentation of my mother’s birth canal. What started as a hobby…became an obsession…and now I’m selling my photographs for the first time at a NYC gallery. 100% of the proceeds will go to charity…so like a good photo…100% of this captures my heart! I’m submitting only two pieces…and I can’t decide…so help! Tell me which ones pique your interest below. The gallery event is on February 7th…and it’ll feature several talented photographers (I may be the only amateur one!). Leave me a comment if you’re genuinely interested in attending or buying any of these pics below. It will be matted and framed and gosh darn it…a tax write-off! This last one may need a little explaining. If I submit this one…it will be titled: “Octopi Love”. When I was in the Maldives…I was able to witness two octopi mating in shallow water. It was incredible to see them change colors and textures as they flamingo danced through the waves. I love how this photo turned out like a psychedelic print.

Encore…Alan Gilbert & the New York Philharmonic! Boooo…Cell Phone Offender

Truly Julie with the first ever NYC native New York Philharmonic conductor Alan Gilbert! You recall that silly phone commercial…”Can you hear me now?”. Um..turns out…YES…EVERYONE CAN HEAR THAT RINGING. And ringing. And more ringing. Still going. An iphone Marimba ring rang for 6 whole minutes during the most intimate part of Mahler’s 9th Symphony during the New York Philharmonic concert this week. So…maestro Alan Gilbert did the unprecedented…he silenced his orchestra and confronted the cell phone offender. This is by far my favorite story I’ve done in 2012. Perhaps because Alan Gilbert is one cool cat…and he totally finished on a high note when I “punk’d” him during our interview. You have to see his expression! He raises his eyebrows so high…they almost fall off his head. And folks, if you’ve never experienced a philharmonic concert at Lincoln Center…you’re simply missing out on one of the most poetic cultural events in NYC. Tickets for open rehearsal are just $16 so treat yourself…but please..turn off that cell! Hmm..maybe Alan will make Marimba into a symphony….

What Jennifer Lopez Wore…

I interviewed Jennifer Lopez and the rest of the American Idol gang last week…and I gotta
tell ya…the girlfriend never has an off day: every hair, lash follicle, atom in her body…
always perfectly in place. I also got to see her newest accessory…new boyfriend Casper Smart. What I can say…he’s 24…and he wears sunglasses indoors. I was surprised to see Jennifer not wearing her usual sequins/blinged out outfit for an Idol promotional event…but it was nice to see her switch it up to something a bit more casual. Listen…she could rock a potato sack and still look sexy. I don’t care who’s on her arm…my eyes are just scanning her killer style. Hmm…perhaps Randy can take a page from her book. Those red/white shoes?! Yo dog…waaaat. Jennifer Lopez Fashion Front: Phillip Lim dress, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, Pomellato jewelry.

The Skinny on Jennifer Hudson

The svelte Jennifer Hudson towering over Truly Julie.

So proud of Jennifer Hudson! It was only 8 years ago when we saw a fresh-faced…200+ pound singer from Chicago walk onto the American Idol stage somewhat bashfully…only to wow everyone with that powerhouse voice. Since then…she’s won a grammy…an Oscar…had a baby…and now she’s a published author. I talked to the 30-year-old about penning her first book “I’ve Got This”…the tough upcoming trial regarding the murder of her mom, brother, and nephew…as well as shedding 80 pounds (one of her many tricks…she scraps the creme off her oreos), etc. Here’s the interview.
