Honey Badger goes to Harvard!

Yeah..that’s me on the left having my “Elle Woods” Harvard Law School moment (“Legally Blonde” reference)! This weekend…the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association (APALSA)–Harvard Chapter graciously invited me to speak on a panel regarding Asians in Media, Entertainment, and Journalism. I could almost feel my dad smiling at me from above:) I never applied to Harvard. I was a good student…but my grades and test scores were not Ivy League caliber. My parents moved back to Korea when I was 15…so for me…high school wasn’t about getting into the top school. It was about surviving. In hindsight…I’m somewhat thankful for my none “Tiger parent” upbringing…because it forced me to sharpen my EQ…versus the overemphasized IQ. It’s my emotional and social intelligence that got me to the #1 television market (New York) …which then in turn is how screen-shot-2012-02-26-at-10-48-35-pma fine institution like Harvard even noticed me….a state schooled girl…to then speak to their elite law students. Cool beans. I’ve been a Feature/Entertainment reporter for almost 8 years in New York City so I guess I forget what I do and who I am is anything but…just what I do and who I am. But…the panel brought to light that I’m practically the only Asian reporter in the country who’s niche is entertainment. And because of my rare scenario…the students wanted to know just how I was able to break the barriers. The simple answer is the aforementioned honey badger-esque EQ. One definition of EQ is this: the ability to identify, assess, and control the emotions of oneself, of others, and of groups. If that’s the case…then it makes sense why My sister Grace says to me all the time…”only you can make Tom Cruise hip hop dance with you…only you can serenade Beyonce on the red carpet and not get kicked off..”, etc. I think this panel couldn’t have happened at a more fitting time. With the rise of Linsanity…where the Knicks’ Jeremy Lin is transcending the game of basketball…and redefining how our culture views Asian Americans…I feel a current in the air…where we can zap the past stereotypes and bask in the spotlight.

Truly Julie in front of Harvard Lampoon’s colorful door. The Lampoon is the undergraduate satire publication…Conan O’Brien was a writer here!

And in true honey badger fashion…I coaxed three busy Harvard educated men to give me a personal walking tour of campus:) Check out the picture gallery!

Good Weekend Read with a Giant Scoop of Truth!

Sure…it’d be really great if life was smooth…sweet…like ice cream. But! It’s not. I’ve been doing a lot of self reflecting lately…and was given a book that’s really helping me to face TRUTH. If you’re about dedicating your life to the truth…then check out “The Road Less Travelled” By M. Scott Peck, M.D. It’s a refreshing take on the psychology of love, traditional values and spiritual growth.

Truly Julie Fashion Front

The trend for this upcoming spring seems to be in alliance with my personal life goals: be brave….be bold…be boisterous. Loud…fun…wild prints are all the rage…so much so that it’s encouraged to mix clashing prints. I test drove the trend above…hope it doesn’t look like I got dressed in the dark:) Truly Julie’s fashion front: Tucker for Target blouse, Free People pants, Vera Wang Lavender wedges, Alexander McQueen sunglasses.

Let there be Light

I’m a sucker for compliments…especially if they shed light on my…well…inner light (I expand on this here…bottom paragraph). Thank you to one of my tweeps..Adrian..who so kindly wrote the words above. It’s simple…yet…means so much to me. I’m kind of obsessed with light in every sense of the word. Light…the energy given off by people. Light…the key to making a photograph alive. I think black and white pictures give light the chance to dance…

Truly Julie sporting chic French brand Sandro. In the last two weeks…I’ve received many of your tweets inquiring about two specific looks. Both are from two of my favorite stores…so here we go! In the top picture I’m wearing a white sheath from Sandro. I first discovered Sandro in Paris…and instantly fell in love. So so so happy they opened a store in The West Village. It’s like an upgraded Zara…clean pieces that are very now…made with quality. The necklace is Alexis Bittar…earrings are Chanel…and my sandle wedges (worn with sox and tights) are Vera Wang Lavender. Below is what I call my ‘happy rainbow bright’ skirt! Even the lovely Minka Kelly was a fan. It’s from my other favorite French brand Maje…which opened two stores recently! The cashmere turtleneck is from Banana Republic and I’ve had it since college! Green/gold Earrings were $5 at a vintage store in Michigan. The arm splint is brought to you by design house Duane Reade:) My running joke with this wrist brace is: you should see the other b*%@ch! I have a torn triangular cartilage from either yoga or carrying 30lbs purses or both…nothing exciting. So there you have it…just call me a francophile…loving the Frech designs…and based on the feedbacks…so do you! Trés Bien…air kisses!

Jason Kennedy is Witt-E!

Truly Julie with Jason Kennedy of E!

Some call him the next Ryan Seacrest. I call him an awesome professional friend. I run into Jason Kennedy of E! every now and then…and I’m always bewildered by how on point he is…ALL THE TIME. He has a rather passionate story of how he got into the TV biz…as a kid he used to chase live trucks around his town in Florida and film his own newscast! So hardcore. What was I doing as a teen…roaming the mall! I think Jason’s success is due to way more than just ambition and talent….he’s really a nice..fun guy! Case in point…we decided to do our own version of a telenovela stare. Hmm…perhaps we shouldn’t quit our day job:)

Truly Julie Chang on Facebook

Hey peeps..I have a favor to ask. Will you please go on facebook.com/TrulyJulieChang and click on the “like” button? One main reason why: someone created a page with my picture and that one has hundreds of “likes”…which concerns me because I have no administrative rights. Hope to see you there soon!

Spice it up for Valentine’s Day

Truly Julie hoping to spice it up at The Brooklyn Kitchen.
I’ll admit it. My kitchen skills have become emaciated throughout my years of being a Manhattan working girl. Yes…I’m that girl that houses closet items in her oven. I have plenty of excuses….I live in SOHO where every other door is a yummy restaurant…there’s no legit grocery store…it’s not time nor cost effective when you’re cooking for one…etc. But this Valentine’s day…I’m going to try to make an effort to love myself and those dear to me by cooking more (well… honestly…cooking period!). Eating out all the time is not healthy…and cooking is a life skill that brings people together. And now you can make learning to cook a hot date! The Brooklyn Kitchen which sits right at the border of Williamsburg and Greenpoint has cooking classes 7 days a week (special couples’ themed cooking classes on Valentine’s day). And since it’s a storefront as well…you can grab many of your necessities right there. I got this idea from HowAboutWe.com…a dating site that focuses on unique experiences rather than algorithms. I grew up in a house where my mom cooked amazing meals multiple times a day…so I’ve always equated preparing a meal for someone as the ultimate act of endearment. I hope this post marinates with you enough to go sweat over the oven! Who needs cupid when you can be the chef spreading the love!

Here’s Hollywood!

Truly Julie serving up the Hollywood sign! It’s no secret. I’m a big fan of dorky…campy photos. Well…I love all photos period…but you get my point. I simply could not refrain from doing this ultimate touristy pose during my recent hike up to THE Hollywood sign. It is unarguably the most famous sign in the whole world…so I huffed it for about 20 minutes…only to discover that you really can’t get right up to the sign. You probably could…but there’s no trail and I’m told there are packs of coyotes running around up there. I’m sure they’re no match for NYC rats…but I’ll leave it to some other sucker to find out:) If you’re ever in Los Angeles…I highly recommend this hike. It’s easy…and you get an awesome view of the city.

My Beloved White Bikini…

                                              Truly Julie in the Maldives!

What a blankie is to a toddler…my white bikini is to me. I’ve had the same Vix white bikini for years…and whether it’s a trip halfway around the world to the Philippines or the Maldives…or common weekend jaunts to Miami (The Delano is my absolute favorite pool in the whole world!) …I’ve gotten pretty amazing mileage out of this white bikini. For me…it conjures up the most joyful…sunny memories…and since I’ve been feeling a bit of the February blues…I had to reminisce! I’m already apprehensive about what I will do once this bikini wears out. Yeah yeah…I could probably find another one in this age of ebay…but it just wouldn’t be my white bikini…the one that’s been with me through so many life grasping voyages. Luckily for now…the bikini is still somewhat in good shape. Translation? I can’t wait to toss it in the suitcase for more beach adventures! (Folks…I post these pictures because I love sharing about my travels. Out of respect…please refrain from leaving inappropriate comments)
